L'automobile est un moyen de transport personnel parmi les plus répandus actuellement sur la planète. Sa capacité habituelle de transport est généralement de cinq personnes, mais peut varier de une à neuf places. L'usage limite l'emploi du terme automobile aux véhicules de dimensions inférieures à celle des bus et des camions, mais englobe parfois les véhicules utilitaires légers à usage personnel. Bien qu'étant des véhicules automobiles, les deux-roues motorisés ne sont pas classées parmi les automobiles.

Les grands constructeurs, fleurons de l'industrie, sont tous des firmes de dimension internationale. Cependant, malgré leurs difficultés pour rester en compétition face aux grands constructeurs et à leurs conglomérats, de petites sociétés marginales, souvent spécialisées, peuvent encore se rencontrer. Nombreuses sont celles qui ont cependant disparu au fil de l'histoire de l'automobile, imprimant parfois durant leur existence des évolutions esthétiques ou techniques majeures ou du moins mémorables.

On notera la forte concentration de la plupart des constructeurs dans de grands groupes internationaux dont l'origine se trouve soit aux États-Unis, soit en Europe occidentale (Allemagne, France, Italie, et dans une moindre mesure la Suède), soit en Extrême-Orient (Japon et Corée du Sud, et dans une moindre mesure la Malaisie). La Chine, voire l'Inde, assemblent principalement sous licence, mais en tenant compte du dynamisme financier actuel dans ces deux pays ainsi qu'à quelques constructeurs nationaux et indépendants, on peut s'attendre à une participation accrue.

Une motocyclette, également appelée par son apocope moto, est un véhicule motorisé à deux roues monotrace (les roues sont l'une derrière l'autre). Le pilote y est assis à califourchon, les mains tiennent le guidon et les pieds sont sur des repose-pieds. Un passager peut se tenir à califourchon derrière le pilote. Une personne conduisant ce type de véhicule est appelée motocycliste ou motard(e).

On peut adjoindre sur le côté de la moto un panier et le véhicule devient un side-car, soutenu par une roue supplémentaire, pour permettre le transport d'un passager supplémentaire (deux passagers au maximum en tout).

The typical motorcycle has an air-cooled engine supported in a metal frame between two wheels. Sometimes a third wheel is added to support an open carriage, called a sidecar, which is attached to the motorcycle. The motor is a two- or four-cycle gasoline engine with one to four cylinders. Its piston displacement generally ranges from 50 to 1,500 cc. Although the motorcycle is not as safe a vehicle as the automobile, its convenience and economy have made it very popular; it is widely used for pleasure riding, racing, and commercial transportation of light goods. Modern touring motorcycles provide automatic transmission, stereo sound, and luggage space. Motorcycles are widely used by the police for traffic patrols. Use of the motorcycle has increased greatly in recent years as a result of the development of the inexpensive, lightweight motorcycle, manufactured chiefly in Asia. Dirt bikes, motorcycles specially designed and outfitted for off-road use, are also now common. The motor scooter, a variation on the motorcycle, has smaller wheels and has most of its working parts enclosed by a shield. The driver sits on a seat with his or her feet on a wide metal platform behind the front shield. Another variation on the motorcycle is the moped, a bicycle to which a small (under 50 cc) auxiliary engine has been attached. Motorcycle racing is done both on paved and unpaved surfaces, over closed and cross-country courses, for a variety of vehicle classes. Particularly popular is motocross, in which dirt bikes are raced over an off-road closed course with numerous turns, jumps, hills, and other irregular terrain.
